What is Learning Together?
Learning Together is a DECD program for families with children aged birth to four years and has operated in South Australia since 2003. The program involves parents in their children’s learning and is based on international research affirming the crucial importance of the very early years of life in laying the foundation for children’s learning and well-being. The program focuses on the importance of children’s oral language development, being read to at an early age, the development of strong dispositions to learning, and the critical role that parents play in supporting their children.
Seven Learning Together programs are offered in South Australia with base sites at Enfield, Christies Downs, Davoren Park, Murray Bridge, Millicent, Port Pirie, and Port Augusta. A number of these sites also support Learning Together Outreach Programs to surrounding schools and Learning Together @ Home home visiting services.
The Learning Together model supports and encourages Adult/Child Engagement or interactions between parents and their children. Learning Together educators support parent/child interactions by working with families on a one to one basis, modelling, providing an environment and resources for interactions and providing a framework for parents to observe their children’s learning.
Adult Learning and Support Education activities are organised for parents based on their family interests. These range from First Aid Certificate Courses, to 'Learning Dispositions' study groups, parent education courses run by other agency staff, enrolment in onsite South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) studies or TAFE studies and support to enrol in other adult education courses such as literacy or computing. Support for families through linking with other agencies is also a key feature
of Learning Together.
Each Learning Together program provides experiences and an environment to optimise young children’s involvement in learning through play. Learning Together educators work alongside parents to plan for, and support, children’s learning. The Learning Together model recognises that family members bring intimate knowledge of their children and family; children bring their own learning knowledge and understandings and the educator brings professional knowledge and experience. Through combining these knowledges and learnings from each other’s perspectives, new understandings are developed.
Learning Together Programs at base sites offer activities including:
* Supported playgroups
* Adult credentialed learning (linked to children’s learning eg SACE)
* Other parent learning
* Cooking groups
* Groups for making books for and about one’s own children
* ‘Hanen’ groups focusing on oral language development
* Learning Disposition Groups
* Circle of Security Parenting Groups
